Pristine, wildly over-capitalized VA bank with a sticky deposit franchise, but a 26% EPS drop and 1.7x book leave little edge.

Diluted EPS $3.08 · FY2025

The read

Middling fundamentals and a rich price (~40% above fair value) leave little margin of safety — a wait-and-see.

Chain Bridge is a high-quality, conservatively run bank holding company. Asset quality is essentially perfect — the MD&A reports zero non-performing assets and zero OREO in both 2025 and 2024 — and the balance sheet is fortress-like: a total risk-based capital ratio of 47.66% and tier-1 of 46.52% are roughly triple the 'well-capitalized' threshold, with a 91.86% liquidity ratio and $587M of cash. Net interest income grew to $51.5M from $44.4M, total assets rose 24.9% to $1.75B and deposits climbed to $1.6B, aided by a differentiated, sticky low-cost deposit base serving political organizations and non-profits. This is a franchise built for safety.

The catch is that safety is currently costing shareholders returns. FY2025 net income slipped 3.4% to $20.2M and diluted EPS fell 26.1% to $3.08 (from $4.17), because the October-2024 IPO lifted the weighted share count ~30.7%. Return on average equity compressed from 20.05% to 12.88% (derived ROE 12.0%) as freshly raised capital sits largely idle in Fed cash and a growing securities book rather than higher-yielding loans. A ~47% capital ratio is not prudence so much as under-deployment — the excess capital is the single biggest drag on returns, and also the biggest source of upside optionality if management can put it to work.
