Catalyst Bancorp, Inc.
Last earnings -0.8% on 2026-04-30
Cheap-to-book, recently-converted LA thrift with excess capital and buybacks — but a 2.5% ROE caps the upside.
Price $16.51 · current
Middling fundamentals offset by an attractive price (~27% below fair value) — worth a look on the value angle.
Catalyst is a $283M-asset community thrift in Acadiana, Louisiana that converted from mutual to stock form in October 2021 (IPO at $10). The headline FY2025 numbers look explosive — net income $2.05M (+166%) and diluted EPS $0.56 (+172%) — but this is a recovery, not growth: FY2024's $3.09M loss was driven by $5.5M of losses on investment-securities sales, against zero such losses in 2025. Strip that out and the franchise is simply underearning. Net interest income rose only 2.6% to $9.8M, and the bank generates a 2.5% ROE on an enormous equity base. At a 29.5x P/E the stock looks expensive, but that multiple is the wrong lens for a sub-scale, over-capitalized bank.
The real story is the balance sheet. Equity is $81.7M, or 28.9% of total assets — roughly triple a normal bank's capital ratio, a direct legacy of the conversion. Book value is ~$20.1 per share (equity $81.7M / 4.06M shares) versus a $16.51 price, so CLST trades at about 0.82x book. That discount is rational given the 2.5% ROE — the market is correctly pricing a bank that doesn't yet earn its cost of capital — but it also sets a floor and gives optionality. Management is buying back stock below book ($2.59M repurchased, shares down 3.5%), which is accretive to book value per share, and net interest margin improved 27bps to 3.92% as the re-positioned commercial strategy and lower non-interest expense (−6.3%) take hold.
