Small, overcapitalized thrift trading near book with doubling earnings but sub-5% ROE — own it, don't chase it.

Diluted EPS $0.94 · FY2025

The read

Middling fundamentals offset by an attractive price (~77% below fair value) — worth a look on the value angle.

First, a data-quality caveat that reframes everything: the tagged 'Revenue' of $598K (and the resulting 296x P/S and 1,300% net margin) is a mis-scoped XBRL contract-revenue line, not ECBK's real top line. As a savings institution its actual revenue is net interest income — the income statement shows interest and fees on loans of $69.1M and securities interest of $4.0M for FY2025. Ignore the P/S and margin ratios entirely; they are artifacts. The figures that matter are net income $7.77M (+94.7%), diluted EPS $0.94 (+95.8%), and equity of $171.9M against $1.61B assets.

The real story is a recently-converted thrift that is overcapitalized and just posted a sharp earnings recovery. Equity is ~10.7% of assets — very high for a bank — which is why ROE is only 4.5% despite earnings nearly doubling; the balance sheet is stuffed with IPO/ESOP capital that hasn't been put to work. That excess capital is a double-edged sword: it caps returns but funds the aggressive buyback ($4.61M paid, share count down 3.1% to 8.79M) and provides a thick loss-absorption cushion. Loans grew from $1.136B to $1.372B (+20.7%) with the allowance at ~0.75% of loans, and deposits rose to $1.13B — the engine is expanding, and the doubling of net income suggests margin/provisioning normalization is finally flowing through.
