Cheap, well-run Maine community bank at 11.4x with earnings re-accelerating +27% and a ~4% dividend — quality on sale.

P/E 11.4 · FY2025 EPS $3.07

The read

Quality fundamentals and an attractive price line up (~233% below fair value) — the rarer case where both the business and the entry look good.

FNLC is a $3.19B-asset Maine community bank trading at 11.4x FY2025 diluted EPS of $3.07 and roughly 1.5x book (equity $260M / 11.3M shares ≈ $23/share) while earning a 13.2% ROE. That is an attractive quality-for-price combination: net income rebounded +27.2% to $34.4M in FY2025 after two years of NIM-driven decline (net income fell from $39.0M in FY2022 to $27.0M in FY2024), and operating cash flow jumped +45.2% to $37.8M. Loans grew 2.3% and the balance sheet is funded conservatively — the bank runs no credit-card or dealer-consumer book, and residential mortgages (30.9% of loans) actually net-recovered in 2025. A ~$16.3M dividend on 11.3M shares (~$1.44/share, ~4.1% yield) is well covered at a ~47% payout, leaving room for the balance to compound retained earnings (+7.9%).

The forward setup is favorable on rates. The MD&A discloses a cumulative one-year static gap of -13.24% of total assets (improved from -15.98%), meaning the bank is liability-sensitive — its funding reprices faster than its assets. In a falling-rate environment that gap is a tailwind to net interest income, which plausibly underpins the FY2025 earnings recovery continuing. The 8.73%+ positive gap in the 1-5 year bucket also shows the book is not dangerously mismatched, and the position sits comfortably inside the ALCO's ±20% policy limit.
