Well-run, low-debt nut processor at a fair 17.6x P/E — but flat earnings, margin compression and a 70% cash-flow drop cap the upside.

Diluted EPS $5.03 · FY2025

The read

Middling fundamentals and a rich price (~45% above fair value) leave little margin of safety — a wait-and-see.

JBSS is a quality, conservatively-financed consumer-staples operator with a clean PCAOB audit (effective internal controls, unqualified opinion) and a credible Long-Range Plan centered on private-brand bars (the Lakeville acquisition and added FY2025 bar assets) and branded growth in Fisher/Orchard Valley Harvest. Revenue has compounded steadily from $858M (FY2021) to $1.11B (FY2025), +3.8% in the latest year, and the balance sheet is genuinely strong: liabilities/equity of just 0.66x, $361M of equity, and a 16.3% ROE. At $88.45 the stock trades at 17.6x diluted EPS and 0.9x sales — a reasonable, not demanding, price for a durable franchise.

The problem is that growth isn't reaching the bottom line. Net income has actually drifted lower for three straight years ($62.9M→$60.2M→$58.9M) even as sales climbed, and FY2025 saw gross profit fall 5.0% to $203M with gross margin compressed to 18.4% and net margin to just 5.3%. The MD&A explains why: rising commodity acquisition costs for nuts, tariff exposure (≈28% of nut/dried-fruit purchases are foreign-sourced), and rising labor costs in a 'challenging snack food environment.' This is a price-taker on inputs whose pricing power is limited by intense private-label competition and cautious consumers.
