Cheap, debt-free turnaround: operating loss shrank 63%, Fishing back to profit, but a tax charge masks a near-breakeven year.
Revenue $592M · FY2025
Johnson Outdoors is a debt-free, cash-rich outdoor-products maker whose top line has finally stopped bleeding — FY2025 revenue of $592M was essentially flat (-0.1%) after a punishing slide from $752M in FY2021. The MD&A confirms the stabilization is real, not cosmetic: Fishing (78% of sales) grew 2% on new-product wins and swung to a $19.6M operating profit from a $6.6M loss the year prior, while gross margin rose 1.2 points to 35.1% on better overhead absorption and lower inventory reserves after the Eureka! brand exit. Operating loss narrowed dramatically from -$43.5M to -$16.2M (+62.8%), and both smaller segments (Camping/Watercraft, Diving) returned to positive operating profit. This is a business healing at the unit level.
The headline -$34.3M net loss overstates the damage. Backing out the $25.0M income-tax expense (a valuation-allowance charge booked against a pretax loss of only ~$9.3M), the enterprise is running close to pretax breakeven, and it generated $56.2M of operating cash flow (+37%) and roughly $40M of free cash flow after $16M capex — an ~11% FCF yield on the $446M market cap. The balance sheet is a fortress: zero long-term debt, $176M cash (up 21%, ~$17/share, ~40% of market cap), $418M equity, and liabilities/equity of just 0.44x. The $13.5M dividend is comfortably covered by FCF. At $43.48 the stock trades at ~1.07x book and 0.8x sales — you are paying little more than tangible net worth for a franchise (Old Town, Minn Kota, Humminbird, Scubapro, Jetboil) with real brand equity.
