Cheap-vs-book Virginia community bank recovering from a 2024 loss, but a 7% ROE caps the upside — own it, don't chase it.

Diluted EPS $1.76 · FY2025

The read

Middling fundamentals offset by an attractive price (~171% below fair value) — worth a look on the value angle.

MNSB is a ~$2.2B-asset Northern Virginia community bank (Fairfax HQ, Nasdaq: MNSB) whose reported 'revenue' ($2.18M), 3,369% gross margin and 83x P/S are XBRL mis-taggings of narrow fee lines — ignore them. What matters for a bank is earnings, book value and returns, and there the picture is a genuine but modest recovery. FY2025 net income rebounded to $15.6M ($1.76 diluted EPS) from a $9.98M loss in FY2024, yet that still sits well below the $22-27M the bank earned in 2021-2023, so this is normalization off a bad year, not a new high-water mark.

The valuation is the reason to hold rather than sell. At $24.64 the stock trades at 14x FY2025 EPS and, more tellingly, roughly 0.83x book value (equity $219M / 7.37M shares ≈ $29.70 book per share). Management is leaning into that discount: cash paid for buybacks jumped ~5x to $4.34M, shares outstanding fell 4.7%, and a $3.05M dividend was maintained — repurchasing stock below book is directly accretive to per-share book value. Retained earnings grew 11.4% to $102M and equity rose 5.1%, so the capital base is building even as assets shrank slightly (-0.7%).
