Cheap, cash-generative cyclical stuck in a hiring downturn — real recovery optionality, but a leveraged, negative-equity balance sheet caps the case.
Revenue $449M · FY2025
ZipRecruiter is a two-sided hiring marketplace living through the wrong half of its cycle. Revenue has more than halved from the FY2022 peak of $905M to $449M in FY2025 (-5.3% YoY), and the P&L has flipped from a $61.5M profit in 2022 to a -$33.0M net loss, with operating income at -$19.4M and diluted EPS of -$0.37. Management's own MD&A is candid about the cause — 'hiring demand remains more muted,' Revenue per Paid Employer fell 2% YoY, and Adjusted EBITDA collapsed from $78.0M (16% margin) to $40.8M (9% margin) as they spent more on marketing to defend the top of the funnel. The Risk Factors lead with cyclicality: demand 'is significantly affected by fluctuations in general economic conditions' and 'swings in, or periods of reduced, economic activity historically have had a disproportionately negative impact on hiring activity.' This is a macro-levered business, not a broken one.
The quality signals are genuinely mixed. Gross margin is still ~89%, the model threw off $11.0M of operating cash flow (positive, though down 76%), and the marketplace remains liquid — $449M current assets against just $70.9M current liabilities and $188M of cash. Crucially, Q4 2025 Quarterly Paid Employers rose 2% YoY, the first inflection after the 2024 decline, which management attributes to heavier marketing bringing employers back. So there is a plausible operating-leverage story: if the labor market thaws, revenue re-accelerates against a fixed-ish cost base and Adjusted EBITDA snaps back.
